biography

 

gregory michael martin was born in san diego, california, where he lived and played until shortly after his third birthday. his family (father, ed and mother, gayle) moved to the grass valley, california area in 1979. soon after finding himself in gold rush country, young greg had himself a little sister, nicole.

greg entered a public school like a normal little kid at the age of 5. when he was in kindergarten, the martin family adopted their first pet, a cat named dusty who died when greg was in the fourth grade. misty, a gray female tabby, joined the martin family in march of 1986. misty gave birth to chiquita in early 1987. chiquita was found dead on the road a few years later, but not before she birthed a little orange cat who became known to the family as o.j. o.j. was born in november, 1987. bandit, a black-tri australian shepherd, joined the family in 1991.

greg spent his childhood reading textbooks and downhill ski racing. in school, greg took tough classes and got good grades. he was a boy scout and received his eagle scout award in 1992. he received a college scholarship from the nevada city mason's lodge. somewhere in there, greg developed affinities for the written word, the painted image, the moving image, and the sung song.

greg’s introduction to art was a high school pottery class. he pursued ceramics until he began taking sculpture classes at uc davis in 1997. it was there that he discovered the work of marcel duchamp and the modernists, don judd and the minimalists, chris burden and the conceptualists, and many historical and un-historical others. soon his work turned into videos and performances. but he uses all kinds of artistic media, including paint. greg graduated from uc davis in june of 1999 with an b.a. in art studio and a minor in philosophy.

recent travels have brought greg through ecuador, peru, chile, thailand, and much of the usa.  his adventurous experiences abroad have been invaluable as inspiration for his art work and his outlook on life and stuff.  greg will living in london, england, beginning in january, 2000.

greg has shown his work at the contemporary art center (sacramento, california), the nexus gallery (berkeley, california) the basement gallery (davis, california), the john natsoulas gallery (davis, california), and has had his work and bio featured at several online sites besides this one, including "the spyglass," online magazine, and lg williams’s art 10 page (sadly, both sites are no longer accessible).  his work and bio have also been featured on the davis community access channel (dctv).  greg received the nelson artfriends stipend in 1998.
