dot
is a single black dot of ivory black oil paint
placed in the center of a tightly stretched
canvas. is
it a navel? a nipple? a
star? an eye? a blemish? or
is it just a paint spot? this ambiguous
image fetches universal meaning. the action of painting dot
was performed by the artist for an audience in
may, 1998, and was accompanied by a short
monologue prepared and read by the artist.
dot was also part of a video
installation in june, 1998, with another dot
painting, doubledot, and a video screen
showing continuous stationary close-up footage
of dot. like real,
dot raises questions about art processes and the
boundaries of what is considered to be
"art".
